AI & Job Seeking · Decision Guide

Should you talk to A-Cai, our AI interviewer, first, or go straight to a consultant?

By the Step1ne executive search consultant team About 3 min
Short answer

If you just want to know whether the opportunity is worth discussing and whether you're a fit, applying and talking with A-Cai is the fastest route: you get a result in 20 to 40 minutes without waiting for a consultant's schedule, and a human consultant still takes over afterward. Adding us on LINE to ask a consultant first only makes sense in one case: you're currently employed and need confidentiality, have special circumstances, or have other concerns you need to settle before deciding whether to apply. Both paths lead to the same human consultant; the only difference is the order.

Actually, this isn't a choice between "AI or human"

Many people frame the hesitation as "should a robot or a human evaluate me?" — but the actual process doesn't split that way. Step1ne's application process is a structured first round with A-Cai, our AI interviewer → a confidential first conversation with a human consultant → interviews arranged. Whichever step you start with, a human consultant will review your information in the end. What you're really deciding is whether to apply and start right away, or ask questions on LINE first and then decide whether to apply.

A headhunter's view

When people hesitate about whether to ask a consultant first, it's usually not because they distrust AI, but because they aren't sure about the act of submitting a résumé itself. Currently employed people especially worry that "sending a résumé means openly announcing you're leaving." If that's your concern, asking on LINE first is the right move rather than chatting with A-Cai first, because the A-Cai interview is part of the formal interview process and happens after you've already applied. But if you're simply curious whether your background is a fit, applying directly is actually the lowest-cost option. If you feel it isn't a match after talking, you're free to decide whether to continue.

When you don't need to overthink it — just go talk

  • Already left your job or actively looking, with no confidentiality concerns? Apply directly and you'll know the result in 20 to 40 minutes — much faster than guessing on your own
  • You just want to know your market value and aren't in a hurry to change jobs. If you don't like what you hear, you don't have to go further—starting a conversation doesn't lock you into anything
  • You've already read the job details and the terms look like a rough fit. The remaining details (pay, flexibility, the company's situation) are exactly what the interview and the follow-up confidential first conversation with a consultant are for

When it's worth asking questions first before deciding to apply

  • You're currently employed and confidentiality matters a lot. You want to confirm first how your résumé is kept confidential and whether your current employer could accidentally find out
  • You have concerns about special employment arrangements. For example, overseas Chinese or foreign status, needing a visa, or specific constraints on your start date
  • Anything unclear in the job description. Asking before you decide to apply is more efficient than discovering it's not a fit after applying

For details on confidentiality and how your résumé is handled, see our other article: A headhunter contacted you. How should you respond? It covers how to request an off-limits list and confidential submissions, and the same principles apply when you apply on your own.

FAQ

After talking with A-Cai, can I still change my mind and not continue?+

Yes. Finishing the interview doesn't automatically move you to the next stage. After a human consultant reviews it, if you're still thinking it over, you can simply tell the consultant where you stand on LINE — you won't be pushed forward.

Can I skip A-Cai and interview directly with a human consultant?+

In the formal application process, the first-round interview is always conducted by A-Cai, so that every candidate's first-round record is consistent and consultants can compare fairly. But if you want to ask about a role or the company before applying, you can message a consultant directly on LINE at any time.

How soon is the next step after the conversation?+

You'll get an initial reply within about 1 to 2 days of applying, and you can check your interview status anytime via the rich menu on our LINE Official Account. If everything looks good, your profile goes to the hiring team right away, and we keep following up as they move through their review.
